Niklas: Worum geht’s in 10100II00101?

Niklas: Irgendwelche letzten Worte?

You can listen to and download the song „the lighthouse“ here: http://scientist.hellcomeshome.com/

Below you can read the answers from vocalist/ guitarist Eric Plonka.

Niklas: Hello guys, how are you?

Fantastic, couldn’t be better!

Niklas: Scientist is described by so many people with so many genres. How would you describe your band?

Eric: I would describe Scientist as an “architectural” metal band meaning, experimental sounds built on top of each other to make an ominous structure of imposing ugliness and riveting chaos. Or instead, just a bunch of guys just making music we like.

Niklas: The first published song “The Lighthouse“ is a punch in the face and on the point. It’s great, guys, what can we expect from the other songs on the album?

Eric: Well, a lot of different vocalists from other bands for one, we wanted to try something different this album. Our first one being mostly instrumental, we felt it was just natural to experiment with different tones of voice and see what’d happen. There’s still some instrumental tunes on this album but very few.

Niklas: Can you describe the album 10100II00101? What is the message behind it? Why use a binary code for an album title? Is one of you a computer scientist?

Eric: Ahaha, nope. No actual scientists here sadly. The binary thing was an idea by Patrick and Justin. It just kinda happened. We originally wanted the record to be called II and we thought it’d be funny to put the a “2” in the middle. Which we came to find out quite quickly, pissed off and confused a lot of people. People are trying to decode it and wondering what it means. That “II’ means “2” and obviously you can’t put a 2 in binary. That’s the joke… ha.

Niklas: Who had the idea to call the band Scientist?

Eric: I did! It’s a name I’ve always wanted to use. I’m really into experimentation musically. Originally when we started, it was just a guitar player and a drummer so, it just fit. Bit like most experiments, it keeps growing and now we’re four full time members with four part time members who we lovingly call “the aggregate.”

Niklas: Is there a common theme in the album/ Are the songs based on each other or in a different formulation – can we expect a concept album?

Eric: Yes, it’s a concept album of a band making a concept album. Ha! No, but maybe kind of? The songs lyrically are mostly apocalyptic in nature… So there’s that.

Niklas: What is 10100II00101 about?

Eric: The end of everything.

Niklas: I looked at the artwork and I am very impressed. If I had money I would get a tattoo of it. I really like the style. Who is the artist and who had the idea for it?

Eric: The artist is the very talented Kuba Sokolski who did our first record. The idea was mine. I’m an animal activist and it’s something I’m passionate about, elephants especially. I’m not a fanatic and I don’t push my agenda on people but I do protest at circuses. I’m really against the use of elephants as playthings. The amount of abuse these majestic creatures suffer at our hands is horrific and sickening. There’s a theme you’ll see and information that comes with the vinyl release about it. Proceeds will benefit elephant sanctuaries and elephant awareness so please, donate.

Niklas: Who made/will make the final mastering of the album?

Eric: The very talented Colin Jordan mastered the record and the equally talented and might I say, just all around terrific guy, Sanford Parker engineered it.

Niklas: Can you explain the relation between the artwork and the album?

Eric: The context of some of the songs go hand in hand with the atrocities I explained above.

Niklas: How did you get in contact with the label Hell comes Home?

Eric: We were very fortunate that Joel (also a super delight of a human being) contacted us after finding us on Bandcamp. We love him and couldn’t be happier with what he’s done for us. We are very lucky to be signed with them.

Niklas: Is the band “Scientist“ your first project together? Is there a prehistory common history of other bands you were all into?

Eric: Eric, Justin and Patrick were in a band together named fireisborn some years ago. And after that dissolved Eric and Justin started Scientist six years later. Then were joined by Patrick and then Mathew.

Niklas: How many gigs did you already play and what are the upcoming events?

Eric: We’ve played way too many gigs. Haha. But seriously, way too many. We’re playing June 11th in Rockford, Illinois, June 24th at Reggie’s with Mos Generator and July 29th in Cleveland with Axioma (ex Keelhaul).

Niklas: What are your ideas and wishes for the future?

Eric: Good fortune and good times for all!

Niklas: What are you all doing, when you are not in the rehearsal room or at concerts?

Eric: Ugh, working jobs we’d rather not be.

Niklas: Any concluding words?

Eric: Thank you for the support and we hope to see you all soon, – Scientist
