Die drei Herren von Deathbarrel spielen „True Norwegian Outlaw Country“. Und die Beschreibung ihrer Musik MUSS ich einfach aus dem beiliegenden Promozettel zitieren – im Original natürlich: „It is the music of men who only have one flask of cologne, used only for weddings and for mother’s birthday, it is the music of men without handbags, men who like to fish and hunt. Deathbarrel is the sound of wrenches and motor oil, of Saturday night beers and truckstops, of longing and loss, of late evenings and aching muscles, of endless roads and shore leave, of the dreams of freedom that all and any working man feels deep in his soul.”
Köstlich, voller Ironie. Und doch zutreffend. Herrlich ungehobelt und doch einfühlsam ist das zu Hörende. Noch dazu überraschend authentisch amerikanisch und gar nicht so nordisch und melancholisch, wie man es von Norwegern erwarten würde. Insofern: doch etwas überraschend. Hier singt das Banjo, dort wird die Fiddle zärtlich gestreichelt oder düstere Bläser blasen. Und immer schön lässig schlendert die Band durchs Bild.
Das hat wahlweise was von Midnight Choir wie bei „Walk Of Shame“ oder klingt tatsächlich nach absolut typischem, gemütlichem Country-Stoff, wie bei „South Of The Border“. Mit „Heard It All Before“ und „Simple Boy“ kommt noch eine Komponente Southern Rock hinzu. Stiltreu ist hier nix. Ach, das ist auch so wie es ist recht gut.
Es macht schon Spaß, was die kernigen Burschen hier fabrizieren. Da hätte man nach acht Jahren Albumpause gerne noch mehr davon gehabt. Denn die vier Songs der EP machen durchaus Lust auf nen ordentlichen Nachschlag.
