Vor einigen Wochen habe ich per Mail ein paar Fragen an die Band ATOMS AND VOID geschickt. Atoms and Void, das sind Arlie Carstensen und Eric Fisher, wie Ihr in diesem Review https://www.handwritten-mag.de/atoms-void-nothing-else-vinyl-release-20-mai-2016/ lesen könnt, eine Post-Rock Band aus Los Angeles/Seattle die in Zusammenarbeit mit vielen anderen Künstlern das Album „and nothing else“ aufgenommen haben. Dieses wurde bereits am 20. Mai 2016 veröffentlicht und ist definitiv das rein hören wert!
Nun folgend könnt Ihr das Interview mit Arlie Carstensen (übersetzt, original siehe weiter unten) lesen.
Niklas: Hallo Arlie, wie geht es dir? Hattest du einen schönen Tag?
AC: Hallo, mir geht es gut, danke. Heute waren die wichtigen Vorwahlen in Kalifornien, denn es markiert einen wichtigen Moment in den amerikanischen Präsidentschaftswahlen.
Niklas: Kannst du ein paar Dinge über dich erzählen, vielleicht auch über dein Leben?
AC: Ich wurde im Staat Washington geboren und verbrachte 5 Jahre meiner Pubertät in Oahu (Hawaii). Ich glaube an die Menschheit, die Liebe, Zusammenhalt, Gleichheit und Freundschaft. Das Leben ist lang und flüchtig, das habe ich nicht nur einmal spüren müssen.
In mehrfacher Hinsicht, sowohl philosophisch als auch künstlerisch , (für Gedeih und Verderb), bin ich das Produkt der Skateboard- Kultur und der DIY- Punk-Bewegung . Das Leben ist ein unglaubliches Geschenk , aber es ist auch sehr hart und herzzerreißend. Ausdauer, Vergebung, Optimismus, Lachen, Tränen und Vertrauen in deine eigenen Instinkte und die Bereitschaft, neue Dinge zu lernen, sind im Leben meiner Meinung nach entscheidend.
Niklas: Ich habe mir euer Album angehört und dies nicht nur einmal und ich bin wirklich beeindruckt. Wie habt Ihr zwei euch denn gefunden?
AC: Eric und Ich sind schon seit vielen Jahren Freunde. Ich habe seine Sichtweise als Toningenieur, Produzent und Multi-Instrumentalist immer sehr geschätzt. Ich entschied mich also in diesem unkonventionellem Weg Musik zu machen und fragte ihn, ob er mein Schreib- und Produktionspartner werden wollte. Zudem ist er ein hervorragender Grafik-Designer, was es umso interessanter gemacht hat das Artwork, Pressebilder oder Filme für das Album zu entwickeln.
Niklas: Ich habe gelesen, dass das Album zusammen mit vielen anderen Künstlern erstellt worden ist. Wen habt Ihr da ausgesucht und warum?
AC: Meistens suchen wir uns Freunde und Musiker bei denen wir denken, dass sie das Projekt sehr gut stützen. Generell schreiben Eric und ich die Songs und machen die Grundstrukturen. Dann verbringen wir ziemlich viel Zeit damit uns Gedanken über mögliche Optionen für zusätzliche Instrumente in bestimmten Teilen zu machen. Wir diskutieren dann, welche Musiker am Besten für die gesamt Atmosphäre des Liedes passen. Manchmal spielt der Musiker nur an ein bis zwei Punkten in einem Song und verschwindet dann wieder – andere, wie der Schlagzeuger Eric Akre spielen schon mal einen ganz Song (oder mehrere) mit.
Niklas: Der Albumtitel ist „and nothing else“? Kannst du das Konzept dahinter erklären?
AC: Der römische Philosoph Lukrez hat in einem 200 Seiten-Gedicht mit dem Titel „On the Nature of Things“ versucht das Universum und die ganze Schöpfung zu erklären. Er glaube an die Existenz von „Atome und das Leere und nichts anderes“ (atoms and void and nothing else). Wir haben dann selbst versucht etwas von diesem Nichts zu schaffen.
Im Leben gibt es nur machen oder nicht machen.
Es gibt nur tun oder nicht tun.
Einige Erinnerungen und Erfahrungen sind gut, andere nicht. So ist das Leben und das ist, was dieses Album ist. Es ist unser Versuch etwas sinnvolles zum Leben beizutragen. Dieses Album ist ein Ausdruck unseres Lebens in der Leere.
Niklas: Beschreibe das Album in ein bis maximal drei Sätzen.
AC: Schuld, Reue, Scham, Güte, Liebe, Tod, Trauer, Licht, Freude und Hoffnung. Das Leben ist lang und flüchtig; es ist banal und sehr komplex. In vielerlei Hinsicht ist dieses Album ein Versuch, diese Wahrheiten, diese Modi, diese Konflikte und diese nebeneinander bestehenden Aspekte des Lebens zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Niklas: Schon etwas geschummelt! Aber egal. Meiner Meinung nach ist das Album mit so vielen Genres verknüpft und selbst einzelne Lieder beinhalten mehrere gleichzeitig. Daher möchte ich fragen, ob es am Anfang eine klare Richtung gab oder die Art des Albums eher zufällig war?
AC: Stilistisch ist jede Note und jedes Wort durchaus gewollt. Glückliche Unfälle sind sicher auf dem Weg passiert, aber Eric und ich sind in der Regel wirklich spezifisch, wenn es um unsere gemeinsame Vision der Musik geht. Wir haben beide ziemlich große musikalische und künstlerische Einflüsse die sich alle irgendwie den Weg in unsere Musik suchen. Wir schreiben Musik aus persönlichen Gründen. Es ist daher wirklich Kunst um der Kunst willen und denken nur selten über Vergleiche mit anderen Sounds und Genres nach. Meistens hören wir nur Songs die einen auf eine Reise mitnehmen wollen – zu versuchen es um die Welt zu schaffen. Das mag wohl lächerlich klingen, ist aber die Wahrheit.
Niklas: Ich habe gehört, dass es recht lange gedauert hat, bis das Album fertig war und das Ihr an vielen verschiedenen Orten aufgenommen habt. Ist das richtig? Warum habt Ihr diesen eher komplizierten Weg genommen? Gab es keine anderen Möglichkeiten?
AC: Eric lebt in Seattle und ich in Los Angeles. Wir treffen uns, wenn wir können und arbeiten oft in erschwinglichen Studioverhältnissen. Es ist nicht der bequemste Weg zu arbeiten, aber bietet viele Möglichkeiten dies zu tun. Das hat uns aber auch die Gelegenheit gebracht mehr über die Songs nachzudenken.
Jede Session, jede Person und jedes Instrument hat die Zeit des Aufnehmens interessant gemacht und es war auf diesem Weg eine lohnende Erfahrung.
Niklas: Das Albumcover ist sehr beeindruckend. Wer ist der Künstler? Was sind deine Gedanken und die des Künstlers dazu?
AC: Eric Fisher hat das entworfen. Wir arbeiteten an Layout, Textblatt und Fotos zusammen (von denen viele in den Jahren des Schreibens und Aufnehmens entstanden sind). Wir wollte ein Kunstwerk schaffen, dass den Hörer in die seltsame und üppige innere Welt der Songs transportiert. Mit der Albumbeilage wollten wir einen kleinen Einblick in den Aufnahmeprozess mit all den wundervollen Musikern bieten. Ich bin auch sehr stolz und dankbar für die Arbeit die Eric darein gesteckt hat. Ich bin ebenso dankbar für das Label Arctic Rodeo Records die uns in Sachen Layout, Verpackung und Vinylfarbe vertraut haben. Von den Songs bis zum Albumcover haben wir alles exakt so gemacht, wie wir es machen wollten.
Niklas: Es gab eine Band vor ATOMS AND VOID, nicht wahr? Was passierte mit GHOST WARS?
AC: Atoms and Void = Ghost Wars. Der Name ATOMS AND VOID hat viel mehr mit unserer Musik, Stimmung und Gedanken über das Leben, die Kunst und die Kultur gemeinsam.
Niklas: Warum habt Ihr den Namen geändert?
AC: Wir haben den Namen geändert als ein EDM – Künstler anfing Material unter dem namen GHOST WARS zu veröffentlichen. Es war eine schöne Entscheidung.
Niklas: Ihr habt, wie oben schon erwähnt, euer Album via „arctic rodeo recordings“ veröffentlicht. Wie seid Ihr mit denen in Kontakt gekommen?
AC: Frederic und Frank von Arctic Rodeo herreichte vor ein paar Jahren der Wunsch von meiner früheren Band, JUNO, ein Box-Set mit Material zu veröffentlichen. Als sie dann hörten, dass Eric und ich vor kurzem das ATOMS AND VOID Album fertig gestellt hatten, haben sie gefragt, ob wir das Vinyl auf Arctic Rodeo veröffentlichen möchten. Wir sagten JA!
Niklas:Was sind deine Ideen und wünsche für die Zukunft?
AC: Ich würde alle Kriege stoppen. Die Menschen brauchen Menschen. Je früher wir uns gegenseitig anerkennen und respektieren, desto eher wird die „menschliche Erfahrung“ starten können und wir erreichen wirklich große Dinge für alle Menschen und unseren Planeten. Mir ist wohl bewusst, dass dies wohl utopisch klingt, dennoch ist es die Wahrheit.
Anders als das würde ich ein weiteres (oder mehr) ATOMS AND VOID Album in den nächsten Jahren fertig stellen. Das würde sich auf der kreativen Seite sehr belohnend anfühlen.
Niklas: Was macht Ihr beiden, wenn Ihr nicht gerade ein Instrument in der Hand habt?
AC: Laufen, Wandern, Skateboarding, arbeiten, Musik hören, über Musik nachdenken, lesen, den Mond anstarren, Freunde und Familie treffenund einfach tun was ich kann, um es durch dieses Leben zu schaffen.
Niklas: Abschließende Worte?
AC: Sei nett zu Fremden, umarme deine Lieben. Denke immer daran, dass jeder Not, Freude und Leid im Leben hat. Du weißt nie was in einer anderen Person vor sich geht. Versuche barmherzig zu sein und sage „Bitte“ und „Danke“. Vergib deinen Eltern und verzeihe deinen Liebhabern. Vergib deinen Geschwistern und vergib dir selbst. Lüge nicht und mache 20 Minuten Nickerchen. Heule gelegentlich den Mond an und fordere dich heraus. Hör dir Nina Simone, Fugazi, Steve Reich und Amon Düül II. Versuche neue Dinge und gehe auf das Licht zu. Gehe dorthin, wo du das Gefühl hast gefunden und geschätzt zu werden. Mache dein Ding, egal was die anderen sagen. Gib es in die Welt und schaue was zurück kommt. Tue etwas um eine Quelle für Licht, Leben und Liebe zu sein. Es ist nicht einfach, aber nichts ist niemals sinnvoll.

Niklas: Hey Arlie, how are you? Did you have a nice day?
AC: Hello, I’m okay, thank you. The California Primary happened today, so that was good. It marks an important moment in the U.S. Presidential election.
Niklas: Can you tell some things about you, about your life?
AC: Um, I was born in Washington State. Spent five years growing up on Oahu, Hawaii. I believe in people, love, togetherness, equality, and friendship. Life is both long and fleeting, I’ve had to learn this lesson many, many times over. In several ways, both philosophically and artistically, (for better and for worse), I’m the product of skateboarding culture and the DIY punk movement. Life is an incredible gift, but it is also quite hard and heartbreaking. Perseverance, forgiveness, optimism, laughter, tears, trust in your own instincts, and a willingness to learn new things are life’s crucial ingredients.
Niklas: So, I listened to your album, not only once, and I am really impressed. So I would like to know how you two guys found one another.
AC: Eric and I have been friends for many years. I’ve always appreciated his perspective as an audio engineer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. So when I decided I wanted to begin recording in this unconventional way— I asked him to be my writing and production partner. He’s also an excellent graphic designer, which made it much more interesting and fun to create the art work, press photos, and abstract films for the album.
Niklas: I read, that the album is a collab with a lot of different musicians. Who did you choose and why?
AC: Mostly, we chose to work with our friends and musicians that we felt would be strong collaborators and improvisers. Generally speaking, Eric and I would begin by writing and recording the basic structure of a song. We’d then spend quite a bit of time thinking about what else the song might need with regard to additional instruments in specific parts. We’d then discuss which musicians would be a good fit for the song’s overall vibe. Sometimes a musician would only play in one or two spots on a song— just sort of float up for a second and then disappear. Other times, (like with drummer Eric Akre), a musician would play through the entire song…and sometimes join us on several songs.
Niklas: The album title is „and nothing else“? Can you explain your concept about the title?
AC: The Roman philosopher Lucretius wrote a 200-page poem called “On The Nature of Things” in an attempt to explain the universe and all creation. He believed existence is made of “atoms and void and nothing else”. We’ve tried in our own small way to create something of this nothing. In life, there is only making or not making. There is only doing or not doing. Some memories and experiences are good, some are not. That’s life, and that is what this album is. It is our attempt to hopefully contribute something meaningful to life. This album is an expression of our lives in the void.
Niklas: Describe the album in one to three sentences.
AC: Guilt, regret, embarrassment, kindness, love, death, sorrow, light, joy and hope. Life is both long and fleeting; it is mundane and wildly complex. In a lot of ways, this album is an attempt to express those truths, those modes, those conflicts, and those co-existing aspects of life.
Niklas: In my opinion, the album has a very wide range of genres and some songs include so many different styles. I never will be able to pin it down. Nevertheless I have to ask, if there was a stylistic direction in the beginning or was it rather accidental?
AC: Stylistically, every note and every word is quite intentional. Happy accidents have happened along the way, certainly. But Eric and I tend to be really specific when it comes to our shared vision of the music. We have fairly wide-ranging musical and artistic influences, all of which sort of find their way into the songs. We write music for deeply personal reasons. It really is art for art’s sake. We rarely think about comparisons to other sounds or genres that might be happening in contemporary music. More often we’re just listening to where a song is trying to take us…the world it’s trying to create. That may sound ridiculous but it’s the truth.
Niklas: I heard that it took quite a long time to produce this album and you recorded it in a many different locations. Is that right? Why did you choose this complicated way? Were there no other possibilities?
AC: Eric lives in Seattle and I live in Los Angeles. We get together when we can and often work in studio environments that are most affordable or available. It’s not the most convenient way to work but in many ways, but this has also afforded us the opportunity to think more deeply about the songs and add to them as time goes by. Every session, every person and every instrument has made the recording process a more interesting and rewarding experience.
Niklas: The artwork is very impressive. Who is the artist? What are your thoughts about it or What are the artist’s thoughts behind it?
AC: Eric Fisher designed the album artwork. We collaborated on the layout, lyric sheet, and photos, (many of which were shot during the years of writing and recording). We wanted to create art work that would transport the listener into the weird, lush, inner world of these songs. With the album insert, we wanted to offer a bit of insight into the recording process with all of these wonderful musicians. I’m very proud and appreciative of the work Eric has put into it. I’m equally appreciative of the label Arctic Rodeo for trusting us with the layout, packaging, and vinyl colors. From songs to artwork we’ve made exactly what we wanted to make.
Niklas: There was a band before this one, right? What happened to „Ghost Wars“? Will there be a revival under this name or is Atoms and Void = Ghost Wars?
AC: Atoms and Void = Ghost Wars. The name Atoms and Void has much more in common with our music, mood, and thoughts on life, art and culture.
Niklas: Why did you change the name?
AC: We changed the name when an EDM artist began releasing material under the name Ghost Wars. It was a nice decision.
Niklas: You published your album under the label „arctic rodeo recordings“. How you get in contact with them?
AC: Frederic and Frank at Arctic Rodeo reached out to me a few years ago about wanting to release a box set of material by my former band Juno. When they heard that Eric and I had recently finished recording the Atoms and Void album they asked if we’d like to release the vinyl on Arctic Rodeo. We said yes.
Niklas: What are your ideas and wishes for the future?
AC: In general, I’d like all of these wars to stop. People need people. The sooner we recognize and respect one another’s common humanity, the sooner we can begin to make the human experience more fulfilling for everyone and achieve truly great things for our populations and our planet. I know this probably sounds utopian. Nonetheless, it’s the truth. Other than that, I’d like to finish another Atoms and Void album or two in the next few years. Creatively, that would feel rewarding.
Niklas: What are you both doing, if you don’t have an instrument in your hands? (Hobbies, Work)
AC: Walking, hiking, skateboarding, working, listening to music, thinking about music, reading, staring at the moon, visiting with loved ones, and just doing whatever I can to simply make it through this life.
Niklas: Any concluding words?
AC: Be kind to strangers. Hug your loved ones. Always remember that everyone has hardship, joy, and sorrows in life. You never really know what might be going on in another person’s life. Try to be compassionate. Say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Forgive your parents. Forgive your lovers. Forgive your siblings. Forgive yourself. Speak the truth. Take 20-minute naps. Occasionally howl at the moon. Challenge yourself. Listen to Nina Simone, Fugazi, Steve Reich, and Amon Duul II. Try new things. Walk toward the light. Go to where you can feel found and appreciated. Make your art no matter if anyone cares. Put it in the world and see what comes back. Do what you can to be a source of light, life, and love. It isn’t easy but nothing meaningful ever is.
